(Quote)A-chan and Nocchi talk about their first contact 7 Feb 2008

From Panpaka Party(08.2.4)
A:Do you remember the day we first met?
N:First day?
A:I remember I saw you singing on the stage of Flower Festival (a Hiroshima city festival in May). You were a member of Baby… Baby what?
N:eh… Happy Baby?
A:Yes ! At that time Nocchi was a member of a unit named Happy Baby , and I , Kashiyuka and Kawayuka(the early member) were there as ぱふゅ〜む.

Both were already students of Hiroshima Actors’ School. ぱふゅ〜む and Happy Baby were the units ,which several students teamed.

My first impression of you was ‘Who is that diva ?’ ,and you became the talk of ぱふゅ〜む members.
You and Happy Baby were class B ,and ぱふゅ〜む were class D. Class B recognized as slightly better performers ,so we talked ‘Class B people are distinguished indeed’ or so.
N:ぱふゅ〜む sang Chokotto Love of Petit-moni then ,didn’t you?
N:I saw all of you applied blue mascara. I felt you were very idol-like stile and get used to appear in media.
Our Happy Baby wore in red shirt and white pants and no make-ups. So we talked that you were very pretty ,and recognized you as our rival.
When was this festival?
A:Soon after we entered Hiroshima Actors’ School. Sixth grade ,and we were 11 years old then.
N:At that time we were not a friend yet.
N:I feel very nostalgic.
A:And now I’m here with you. It is a wonder.

Quick Japan #75 -Interview of Shirou Yamamoto(Perfume’s manager) and Kashiyuka 31 Jan 2008

When did you start to work with Perfume?
I joined Amuse(Perfume’s management office) in September 2004 ,just after Vitamin Drop was released. I went to your live events with Mr.Ishii(former manager ,who is said to introduced Yasutaka Nakata for Perfume’s songmaker).
Mossan(Yamamoto’s nickname) scarcely tell us what to do at that time.
Imposing you to do something is useless and harmful. As Mr.Ishii said ,you three are clever and can adjust to surroundings wherever you go. So there were nothing to tell you.
But you even didn’t come to our event ,even though it was your job!(Laugh) But your absence made us to decide to help ourselves.
Mr.Ishii taught us ,who didn’t know anything just after coming to Tokyo ,to behave freely. He said ‘What is important for you to have fun yourselves. You do not have to try to act perfectly.Even if you failed ,the experience will be helpful to your next chance.’ Mossan is a person of few words ,but you listen to our openion. In fact ,when we heard Mr.Ishii left us ,we cried loudly. It is sorry to Mossan ,but we really missed him. But now we are happy with you.
Glad to hear that(laugh). Recently I talked with Mr.Nakata(Yasutaka) about current situation of Perfume’s staff team. Now it is a mixture of new-comer staff and old staff ,and there is sometimes discussion between new staffs’ openion to do something new and old staffs’ openion not to change things. But Mr.Nakata said ‘Perfume will accept everything ,so it is OK.’ It is a fact we haven’t decided strict direction and have tried everything that we thought to be fun. And such attitude always brought surprise to our fans.

One good example is Polyrhythm. We(Amuse staff) requested him to change the song several times ,because it would be used for ‘NHK environment and Recycle campaign’. But when I said to delete complex rhythm part(polyrhythm polyrhythm rhythm rhythm …) ,Mr.Nakata said ,’I will go myself.I will go and pursuade.’ and came to Amuse office. He said ,’Current young people are eager to accept new things. So it is too late to adjust to young people’s sound after knowing it. Creaters must always try to advance further.’
When I said to him ‘But it is impossible to perform that polyrhythm part on TV or radio.’ ,he answered ‘It’s OK.I will made radio-edit version cutting polyrhythm part. But I WANT to make this version to be the #1 track of this single.’
I said ‘But this part is too long for a interlude’ ,and he answered ‘This is NOT an interlude. This is a vocal part.’
After such discussion we finally decided to believe his sence.

(Quote) Message from Yasutaka Nakata to Perfume(At Perfume’s radio program Panpaka Party) 29 Jan 2008

Congratulation for your gaining no.3 at Oricon chart ! You are great ,and I share this pleasure with you.
I have been made a plenty of songs ,but currently many people talk to me about Perfume’s success ,and I am glad to hear it.
When I am recording with you ,and I feel your objective view about Perfume leads to your songs’ improvement. So I have fun with recording.

Bounce(Tower Record’s free magazine) #295 -Interview of Yasutaka Nakata- 29 Jan 2008

When I received first request to make songs for Perfume ,I simply thought I could do something interesting, because at that time they were performing very idol-like way.

The songs I make for them consist of parts which would be accepted as pops from club-music ,but for people who listen to Perfume as a pop singer may accept it with fresh feeling ,and when I play their CD in a club I receive a hot reaction because Perfume’s music is not targeted for club music. I think this borderlessness is a big reason for gaining current popularity.

Perfume and their staffs do not fully understand current electronic scene. But their mis-match doings from their misunderstandings and unawareness makes Perfume’s music even more interesting.

I think my role for Perfume’s first stage has ended. Currently I do not tell them the way how to sing ,so their voices are beginning to vary. But this variation leads to my good inspiration.
Now I am waiting for them to bring me their own idea ,like ‘Mr.Nakata what do you say to this?’

(Quote)J-WAVE TOKIO HOT 100 interview(08.01.20) 20 Jan 2008

(Why did you decided to go to univercity?)
At the time(autumn 2006) our future were unsure. Anytime we might be told to go back to our hometown Hiroshima.
We were on the cliff. We didn’t think we could continue our carrier as singer ,so we decided to go. Our manager also recommended us ,saying ‘It is difficult for me to tell your future…’.

Quick Japan #75 -Interview Mikiko Mizuno (dance teacher and producer since when Perfume was in Hiroshima) and Nocchi 15 Dec 2007

What do you remember about the day you met us?
A-chan was cheerful girl as she is. Active and cheerful and attractive among children in the class. About Kashiyuka ,I remember she was a girl who likes small animals and had a something different from others…she sometimes talked to bugs. And Nocchi was very shy.
When dancing and singing I was all right ,but…
You were not good at communication.
(Interviewer:How were dance lessons in Hiroshima Actors’ School?)
Teacher Mizuno was kind but strict. But I liked her and her dance ,so if I felt the lesson tough but I was positive to learn. I think other girls thought so too. “I want to do as Mizuno taught”, “I eager to master it perfectly” ,perhaps I may thought like that.
(How long does it take to master a dance for a song ?)
Now it takes about two hours.
At first two days. Then it became a half day ,and then became two hours… Perfume’s dance seems simple ,but in fact it is extremely difficult. At a glance it may look catchy and easy to learn ,but if you try you may know how difficult it is. It may understandable only people who learn dance. Perfume’s dance is based on a huge stack of basic lesson they have practiced again and again since they were children.
(Why Perfume became popular by Polyrhythm ,do you think?)
I don’t think Polyrhythm is an only reason. Along with the songs Perfume have had before ,Polyrhythm becomes notable by its quality. People who came to know Perfume by Polyrhythm ,and become interested in Perfume ,and they will meet other songs and impressed by deepness of Perfume’s music world.
Please give Perfume an advise ,and I’m glad if you have some messages to us ,’cause you have been watching our dance and our personalities for a long time.
One thing I can say is “please do not change”. Perfume become popular slowly but steadily. I think it is because of what you have gained at your own pace. So I would like you to keep your way. Now your surroundings are changing faster than the change of yourselves ,so you may be a little puzzled. I would like you not to pay too much attention to people arround you ,and keep your own pace.
It is lucky of you to become popular when you can be grateful to this unbelievable success.

Yasutaka Nakata interview(2) (07.11.26 Weekly PLAYBOY Japan) 11 Dec 2007

There is a reason for Yasutaka to keep Perfume’s songs far away from that of J-POP artists or idol singers.
He seems to think of breaking the dead-end feelings which are filled in current J-POP scene.

“Originally ,pops is a kind of music which is highly advanced but can listen and understand with ease. But current J-POP is losing its coolness. I find all songs ranked in Oricon top 10 are so common ,and boring songs. I even wonder that they are made by only about a few composers. I think the people in music industry believe in hit-making methods which had been popular in 90’s. And they are trapped in a fantasy that such method will be unchanged forever. If someone shows another cool ,stylish music ,they say “Isn’t it strange?” “

He supposes such situation made many artists and musicians avoid to challenge.
“Looking bands and singers around me ,I often see they are not making music for their fans but for exectives of the record companies. But currently listeners have become wise. They can see into creators’ mind with listening a song.
They can see whether a creator was happy with making a song or not. They can see whether a creator was free from business restrictions or not.
I believe that every musician has to release music to which he can say “I love this song”.
If he wants to say “This song is one of the best!” proudly ,he must do his best to remove every note or sound he dislikes from a song. I hope the number of musicians with that mind to increase in the field of pops.”

Yasutaka Nakata interview(1) (07.11.26 Weekly PLAYBOY Japan) 26 Nov 2007

Readers who know his name might be deep music fans.Yasutaka Nakata,27 years old,is a sound producer who is expected to be a representative of next-generation J-POP artists.

Besides his own unit capsule ,he is also the sound-producer of the artists such as Perfume ,Ami Suzuki ,MEG. And including his works as a re-mixer of songs by m-flo and Leah Donna Dizon and so on, Yasutaka takes part in producing sound of 12 artists ,only this year. If we take Yasutaka’s personal works(the soundtrack of drama”Liar Game”) into account ,the number of the songs he released this year are over 70. His sound has multiple tastes of electronic/house/rounge ,and some even say he can become a successor to former great producers in J-POP ,such as Tetsuya Komuro ,Takeshi Kobayashi ,and Tsunku.

Amomg Yasutaka’s works ,Perfume songs have achieved the biggest praise especially. Since before ,Perfume’s techno/electronic sounds far beyond average idol pops have gained praise from deep music fans ,and after “Polyrhythm” ranked in 4th place in Oricon daily chart ,Perfume has become popular nationwidely.

“Because I want to concentrate to make music ,I do not care whether the atmosphere of the people around me is hot or cold. But ,one thing I can say is that becoming popular and record good sales is the job of an idol ,so I have always hoped Perfume’s success in business ,at least better than my unit capsule. So I think Perfume has at last become its healthy position.”
Yasutaka says like this calmly ,but the way toward this success hasn’t been flat. He says making music for Perfume has been always a battle.

“I receive many requests and restrictions.I have to make tie-up campaign song ,I have to compose for three-girl singers, I have to make them suitable for live singing ,and so on. But if I cared too much about such restrictions I could only make typical ,mediocre songs. If I made songs based on the scheme of getting easy popularity ,wouldn’t it be notorious ? I do not mean to make CDs as a kind of fan-goods at all. So I think it is happy that I kept making songs which can be listened as good music and succeeded.
